Job Summary: Responsible for responding to sexual assault survivors at San Gabriel Valley Medical Center to provided professional nursing care with the Sexual Assault Response Team; coordinates immediate and follow up plan of care with victim and interdisciplinary team
Education/Training/Experience:
Graduate of an RN School of Nursing
Two years clinical nursing experience-preferably acute care, ER, Women’s Health
Completion of a SANE/SART training course work in accordance with guidelines written by the Cal-EMA (can be completed after hire)
Licenses/Certifications:
Current CA RN license
Current BCLS-C
National Certification as a SANE preferred after having experience as a SANE/SAFE
Job Duties:
Assess, plans, evaluates patient care as stated in competency skill checklists; policies and procedures and protocols for FNRT. And standards of care as established by the International Association of Forensic Nursing.
Conducts forensic evidentiary examination on victims and suspects, Medical interview, physical and genital examination using photo-documentation and chemical markers, evaluates and reports findings to law enforcement.
Provides verbal and written health care instructions, follow up information and referrals to patient and family members.
Maintains victim/suspect documentation and confidentiality of all medico-legal records according to facility and FNRT protocols.
Participates with FNRT director, or her designee, quality assurance activities.
Maintains equipment and supplies..
Takes on-call shifts as scheduled responding within one hour.
Submits work schedule availability to FNRT Director as necessary to facilitate on-call schedule.
Maintains contact with FNRT Director for at least two years after termination or work agreement and responds to any and all subpoenas on cases examined while contracted with FNRT.
Maintains close working relationship with FNRT Director and members of other disciplines involved in the care of sexual assault victims.
Job Requirements:
Minimum professional experience 1-2 years.
Education required: Registered Nurse with current California license.
Specialized training required: Completion of a course as a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner based on the training curriculum established by Cal-EMA
Clerical skills required: Answer telephone, English proficiency, and interpersonal skills, maintain patient charts, basic computer skills, fax, photocopier.
Forensic/Nursing skills required: cameras, digital camera, Woods lamp, microscope, pulse oximeter, air drier, Doppler, vital signs.
Communication skills required: Public speaking ability, adult education, chain of custody, catalogue photo documentation.
Physical demands: Frequent prolonged standing, minimal walking, transferring and lifting of patients, occasional reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling, and crouching.
Psychological demands: Handles emergency or crisis situations, handles multiple jobs as one time.
Working conditions: Exposed to infectious body fluids and wastes, exposed to unpleasant elements, exposed to infections and contagious diseases, contact with patients under wide variety of circumstances, subject to varying and unpredictable situations.
Management experience: Excellent human relations and oral/written communication skills, plans and organizes work autonomously.
Initiative and Judgment: Requires initiative, resourcefulness and judgment in executing the role and responsibilities of a Forensic Nurse Examiner.
